The Houston Arboretum & Nature Center, located on the western edge of Memorial Park, is a nonprofit urban nature sanctuary. This 155-acre property provides education and conservation of native plants and animals in the heart of the city. Founded on February 17, 1967, the Houston Botanical Society changed its name to better reflect the natural qualities of its grounds. A capital campaign in the 1990s funded an extensive renovation of the building and the installation of new exhibits in the Discovery Room. The result was a dramatic increase in attendance.
